Abstract
from arXiv · showhide
Developing generative models for interleaved image-text data has both research and practical value. It requires models to understand the interleaved sequences and subsequently generate images and text. However, existing attempts are limited by the issue that the fixed number of visual tokens cannot efficiently capture image details, which is particularly problematic in the multi-image scenarios. To address this, this paper presents MM-Interleaved, an end-to-end generative model for interleaved image-text data. It introduces a multi-scale and multi-image feature synchronizer module, allowing direct access to fine-grained image features in the previous context during the generation process. MM-Interleaved is end-to-end pre-trained on both paired and interleaved image-text corpora. It is further enhanced through a supervised fine-tuning phase, wherein the model improves its ability to follow complex multi-modal instructions. Experiments demonstrate the versatility of MM-Interleaved in recognizing visual details following multi-modal instructions and generating consistent images following both textual and visual conditions. 1 Introduction
Interleaved image-text modeling must handle multiple images and longer article-like sequences, while fixed visual-token budgets can omit details. MM-Interleaved uses context-guided multi-scale feature access to support interleaved text and image generation.
1 Introduction
- Fixed visual-token budgets can overlook critical image details, while increasing tokens per image strains limited LLM context, especially for multi-image inputs. The paper identifies context-insensitive Perceiver Resamplers, which compress images without using LLM context, as the central issue.Source: §1 · p. 2
- MM-Interleaved uses MMFS in an end-to-end model that generates textual and visual responses to interleaved image-text inputs.During generation, tokens can access multi-scale high-resolution image features while maintaining the causal relation between image and text tokens.Source: Figure 1 · p. 2, §1 · p. 3
- The pipeline predicts text words from LLM text-token features and invokes a diffusion-based image decoder when it predicts a <BoI> token. The image decoder receives prior LLM output features as conditions and can extract details from previous images.Source: §1 · p. 3
- Pre-training uses paired and interleaved image-text data, followed by supervised fine-tuning on multimodal tasks including visual question answering and visual storytelling. The paper reports competitive results and higher token efficiency than previous image-to-text and text-to-image methods, and new state-of-the-art results against joint image-text generation models.Source: §1 · p. 3
- MMFS dynamically extracts relevant details from multi-scale feature maps of multiple images using intermediate LLM context features. This is intended to preserve fine-grained visual information with fewer visual tokens per image.Source: §1 · pp. 2–4
- The model achieves state-of-the-art results on varied multimodal comprehension and generation benchmarks without using in-house data.It generates accurate text descriptions and visually consistent images from interleaved image-text inputs.Source: §1 · pp. 3–4
