Abstract
from arXiv · showhide
Temporal action detection in long untrimmed videos suffers from inaccurate localization and low-quality proposals, especially with sparse annotations and ambiguous boundaries. For open-ended video understanding and LLM-driven event analysis, reliable proposals connect temporal localization, event annotation, and semantic understanding. However, conventional temporal action detection (TAD) pipelines lack explicit modeling of proposal localization quality, cross-representation support, and inter-proposal relations. We propose Hybrid Rank-Calibration of Action Proposals (HyrCap), a proposal-centric query-based TAD framework for temporal event understanding. Hybrid combines complementary video features with different localization cues, while Rank-Calibration adjusts proposal ranking confidence to reflect localization reliability and candidate competition. HyrCap treats dense query-based predictions as an over-complete temporal event hypothesis space. Cross-Representation Consensus Calibration, Localization Quality Estimation, and Proposal Redundancy Suppression improve proposal ranking reliability, localization quality, and candidate discrimination. Inspired by LLMs' capabilities in fine-grained semantic recognition, event description, and reasoning, we introduce HyrCap for Semantic Action Understanding, using calibrated proposals for standard TAD and as inputs to LLM-based semantic understanding. We define a staged evaluation protocol to separately measure event localization, segment-level semantic understanding, and combined event understanding performance. Experiments on public benchmarks show that HyrCap achieves state-of-the-art performance across multiple metrics and provides a finer-grained paradigm and evaluation protocol for query-based event segmentation and annotation.
1 Introduction
Query-based TAD needs to preserve, rank, and match proposals reliably, not merely generate candidates. HyrCap calibrates proposal confidence and adds a staged evaluation protocol that separates localization from segment-level semantic understanding.
1 Introduction
- The introduction identifies sparse annotations, imprecise boundaries, and missing explicit modeling of proposal quality, cross-representation support, and inter-proposal relations as challenges for TAD.Reliable proposals are framed as an interface between temporal localization, event annotation, and semantic understanding.Source: §1 · p. 2
- HyrCap treats dense query predictions as an over-complete event hypothesis space and calibrates their rankings using complementary features, localization estimates, and redundancy suppression. Its modules target ranking reliability, localization quality, and candidate discrimination.Source: §1 · p. 2
- The staged semantic-understanding protocol evaluates proposal localization first, then segment-level classification, description, or reasoning on localized events. The first stage collapses action categories into foreground and background; the second uses an LLM or semantic classifier.Source: §1 · pp. 2–3
- The proposal analysis examines false positives, ranking, evaluation matching, and video features to clarify their relationship with proposal quality and final mAP.Source: §1 · p. 2

Related work covers video representations, anchor-free and query-based TAD, and localization-aware ranking methods. It distinguishes temporal proposal challenges from approaches developed for object detection and connects reliable localization to video-language understanding.
Video representations for action understanding
- Video feature extractors span 3D convolutions, temporal-segment aggregation, masked reconstruction, large-scale Transformer pretraining, and self-supervised joint-embedding prediction.The cited examples include I3D, R(2+1)D, TSN, VideoMAEv2, InternVideo2, and V-JEPA2.Source: §2 · p. 3
Temporal action detection
- Anchor-free TAD predicts segments directly, while query-based methods use learnable queries for set prediction; both paradigms include methods with remaining reliance on NMS or sliding windows.TE-TAD is described as end-to-end, with DiGIT adding encoder and decoder enhancements.Source: §2 · p. 3
Localization quality, temporal refinement, and video-language understanding
- Object-detection methods address score suppression, localization estimation, or box fusion, but TAD adds ambiguous temporal boundaries, redundancy, one-to-one matching, and global score ordering. The review presents reliable temporal localization as foundational to subsequent event-level semantic understanding.Source: §2 · p. 3
3 Analysis of Proposal Behavior
The analysis categorizes false positives and compares proposal behavior across video features. It finds complementary strengths in InternVideo2 and V-JEPA2, motivating a hybrid feature design.
FP Categorization
- False positives are categorized as duplication, localization, background, or label errors, with proposal quality also shaped by boundary accuracy, ranking, redundancy, and one-to-one matching. The analysis instantiates these categories with DiGIT and compares I3D, InternVideo2, and V-JEPA2.Source: §3 · p. 3
Feature-dependent Proposal Behavior
- InternVideo2 has the highest top-decile true-positive rate and fewer high-score duplication, background, and label false positives; V-JEPA2 has fewer localization false positives in the top 5,000 predictions.Figure 2 visualizes proposal behavior for different feature inputs under TAD.Source: §3 · p. 4, Figure 2 · p. 4
- V-JEPA2 provides complementary localization reliability despite weaker detection representation than InternVideo2, while I3D shows weaker localization reliability and more background false positives.Source: §3 · p. 4
4 Method
HyrCap recalibrates dense query-based proposals using complementary InternVideo2 and V-JEPA2 evidence, localization reliability, and local proposal competition. It then refines boundaries and supports a two-stage protocol that localizes events before semantic interpretation.
4 Method
- HyrCap generates dense proposals from InternVideo2 and V-JEPA2, then recalibrates their scores using cross-representation consensus, localization reliability, and local proposal competition.Temporal voting refines proposal boundaries, followed by multi-class NMS for final detections.Source: §4 · p. 4
4.1 Cross-Representation Consensus Calibration
- Cross-Representation Consensus Calibration uses V-JEPA2 proposals as class-agnostic temporal evidence and learns a gate to adjust InternVideo2 proposal ranking without changing segments or categories. The gate is supervised by primary-proposal localization quality.Source: §4.1 · pp. 4–5
4.2 Localization Quality Estimation
- Localization Quality Estimation predicts category-agnostic temporal alignment from confidence, geometry, consensus, and local-ranking cues, then uses that estimate as a multiplicative ranking factor. Its supervision is constructed offline from ground-truth overlap.Source: §4.2 · p. 6
4.3 Proposal Redundancy Suppression
- Proposal Redundancy Suppression models same-video, same-class candidates using overlap and pairwise cues, reducing the ranking priority of redundant or locally inferior proposals. After reranking, temporal voting refines boundaries before multi-class NMS produces detections.Source: §4.3 · p. 6
4.4 HyrCap for Staged Semantic Understanding
- The loc-first protocol selects compact, category-agnostic event proposals before passing each segment through a trained projector to a semantic model for classification, captioning, or reasoning.Joint evaluation requires both the temporal segment and semantic prediction to be correct.Source: §4.4 · pp. 6–7
5 Experiments
Across public TAD benchmarks, HyrCap improves query-based detection, while its component and controlled comparisons examine how calibration affects proposal ranking. Staged and qualitative evaluations also assess localization, semantic understanding, and proposal quality.
5.1 Setup

5.3 Ablation Study
- CPCC uses cross-representation consistency, LQE estimates localization reliability, and PRS suppresses redundant candidates; combined modules perform best and reduce duplicate, background, and localization false positives. In controlled comparisons using identical proposal inputs, HyrCap exceeds Fixed Consensus by 1.5 points in average mAP, indicating gains are not merely from additional proposals.Source: §5.3 · pp. 8–9, Table 4 · p. 11
5.4 Staged Semantic Evaluation
- The staged protocol evaluates category-agnostic event localization separately from segment-level semantic prediction and joint event understanding; HyrCap improves localization mAP and final joint performance. For DiGIT and TE-TAD, localization mAP rises from 77.6 and 76.2 to 80.3 and 79.1, respectively.Source: §5.4 · pp. 9–10
5.5 Qualitative Results
- Qualitative comparisons show HyrCap proposals more accurately cover ground-truth segments, rank true positives higher, and reduce duplicate, background, and localization-error false positives. The resulting event segments are described as stable and suitable for downstream semantic understanding.Source: §5.5 · pp. 10–11
6 Conclusion
HyrCap improves query-based temporal action detection through proposal calibration and supports staged LLM-based semantic understanding. Its benefits remain bounded by base-detector coverage, auxiliary-feature costs, and the scope of the current semantic evaluation.
6 Conclusion
- HyrCap consistently improves strong query-based TAD baselines, with ablations and qualitative results verifying its components. It combines cross-representation consensus calibration, localization quality estimation, Proposal Redundancy Suppression, and temporal boundary refinement.Source: §6 · p. 11, Figure 5 · p. 12
- If the base detector misses candidates covering true action instances, rank calibration and boundary refinement cannot recover those events; auxiliary representations may also add extraction, storage, and inference costs. The framework depends on base-detector proposal coverage, while its consensus module uses auxiliary video representations for complementary temporal evidence.Source: §6 · pp. 11–12
- The staged semantic protocol depends on selected proposals, a trained projector, and a semantic model, and its current evaluation does not fully cover open-vocabulary discovery or complex long-form reasoning.Localization or visual-semantic projection errors may affect segment-level classification, captioning, and reasoning; evaluation is mainly based on predefined action categories and public TAD benchmarks.Source: §6 · p. 12
