Abstract

from arXiv · show

We develop a flow-map framework for nonlinear transport equations, comprising a self-consistent exact frozen flow and its numerical realization. An exponential--pullback identity represents each frozen transport exponential in a commutator-free exponential integrator as the pullback induced by its exact backward characteristic map. Composing these maps defines the self-consistent exact frozen flow, a time-discrete construction with autonomous frozen fields formed from linear combinations of transport fields evaluated at the stage approximations. A local freezing-error identity and a one-step estimate for the Lie--Euler Vlasov--Poisson update separate field variation, field approximation, and characteristic integration errors; these estimates do not assert global PDE convergence. We specialize this construction to the Vlasov--Poisson system and obtain the self-consistent numerical flow through velocity-space quadrature, a discrete Poisson solve, field interpolation, and numerical integration of the frozen characteristic equations. Under suitable regularity assumptions, we prove that the self-consistent exact frozen flow for this system is a volume-preserving diffeomorphism. Temporal self-convergence tests on Vlasov--Poisson and guiding-center benchmarks yield rates consistent with the design orders and illustrate conservation behavior and the evolution of solution structures in long-time simulations with large time steps.

1. Introduction

Nonlinear transport couples the evolving solution to the characteristic flow that transports it, while high-dimensional phase space and fine filaments challenge fixed-resolution methods. This work constructs self-consistent flow maps from commutator-free exponential integrators and establishes geometric and local-error results alongside numerical tests.

1. Introduction

  • The exponential–pullback identity turns each frozen transport exponential into pullback by its exact backward characteristic flow. The construction uses autonomous frozen fields to make the self-consistent, otherwise implicit evolution tractable at the time-discrete level.Source: §1 · p. 3
  • The framework composes exact backward characteristic maps from frozen linear combinations of stage transport fields to construct a self-consistent exact frozen flow. Its numerical realization approximates the fields and integrates the frozen characteristics numerically.Source: §1 · pp. 3, 6
  • Vlasov computations face high-dimensional phase space and increasingly fine filaments, motivating flow-map methods that approximate the characteristic map and recover the solution by pulling back initial data.CMM and NuFI are cited as representative methods; NuFI reconstructs maps from stored electric-field histories.Source: §1 · pp. 4–5
  • For Vlasov–Poisson, the self-consistent exact frozen flow is a volume-preserving diffeomorphism under suitable regularity assumptions.The paper also derives a local freezing-error identity and a Lie–Euler one-step error budget, without claiming global PDE convergence.Source: §1 · p. 6
  • Temporal self-convergence tests on Vlasov–Poisson and guiding-center models yield rates consistent with CF-RKEI design orders. The study also examines conservation behavior and solution structures in long-time simulations.Source: §1 · p. 6

2. Exact Flows and Pullback Representations for Transport Equations

The section establishes the flow and pullback tools used to represent linear transport, then distinguishes prescribed fields from fields coupled to the transported solution. Freezing the self-consistent field at numerical stages yields computable autonomous subproblems whose exponentials act through backward characteristic maps.

2.1. Prescribed Vector Fields

  • For prescribed time-dependent fields, integral curves assemble into two-parameter flow maps that carry states from an initial time to a later time.Their domains may be local; where defined, the maps are diffeomorphisms with inverse obtained by reversing the times.Source: §2.1 · pp. 8–9

2.2. Pullback Representation of Linear Transport

  • Linear transport by a prescribed field is represented by pullback along its backward characteristic flow; for an autonomous field, exp(hC_b)g = g ◦ φ^−h.The operator exponential here denotes the transport solution operator, and the identity is restricted to existing characteristics when the field is incomplete.Source: §2.2 · pp. 10–11

2.3. Prescribed versus Self-Consistent Vector Fields

  • When the transport field depends on the transported solution, the exact flow representation is implicit because evaluating it requires the intervening solution-dependent field.Freezing the field at a state makes the characteristic subproblem autonomous and computable independently of the unknown trajectory.Source: §2.3 · pp. 11–13
  • The frozen exponential–pullback identity converts each CF-RKEI factor into pullback by an exact backward characteristic map, with its field given by the same linear combination of stage fields.Composing these maps approximates the nonlinear self-consistent evolution through frozen stage subproblems.Source: §2.3 · p. 13

3. A Self-consistent Exact Frozen Flow and its numerical realization

This section recasts commutator-free exponential integrators as compositions of exact frozen characteristic flows and develops their numerical realization for Vlasov–Poisson. It separates local field-reconstruction and characteristic-integration errors, establishes geometric properties of the exact frozen flow and its compositions, and clarifies limits on convergence claims and conditions for positivity of the numerical history map.

3. A Self-consistent Exact Frozen Flow and its numerical realization

  • The framework constructs transport updates from characteristic flows without spatially discretizing the transport operator, while its estimates do not establish global PDE convergence. The section also states that, under suitable regularity assumptions, the exact frozen flows and their compositions are diffeomorphisms that preserve volume.Source: §3 · p. 14

3.1. A commutator-free Runge-Kutta exponential integrators approximation

  • CF-RKEI advances nonlinear ODE stages and final states through exponentials of linear combinations of state-dependent matrices, extending the Lie–Euler frozen update. The matrix is frozen during each step but evaluated at the current numerical state, retaining its solution dependence.Source: §3.1 · pp. 14–15

3.2. Construction of the self-consistent exact frozen flow

  • Each frozen transport exponential is the pullback of its exact backward characteristic map, and the resulting composition acts right-to-left because pullbacks are contravariant. The local freezing-error identity does not require time-Lipschitz continuity of the field; an O(τ^2) defect is a conditional local consistency result, not a global convergence guarantee.Source: §3.2 · pp. 17–18

3.3. A self-consistent exact frozen flow and numerical flow for the Vlasov– Poisson system

  • The construction specializes to a self-consistent exact frozen flow for Vlasov–Poisson, with a one-step error budget and a numerical realization; the framework also applies to guiding-center models. The guiding-center model is considered in the numerical experiments described in the paper.Source: §3.3 · p. 19

3.3.1. A self-consistent exact frozen flow for the Vlasov–Poisson system

  • The Lie–Euler one-step estimate separates incoming-distribution, field-variation or approximation, and characteristic-tracing errors; field accuracy becomes more demanding as velocity gradients grow through filamentation. With exact initialization and an exact step-initial field, the bound gives an O(τ^2) local freezing defect plus characteristic integration error under the stated time-Lipschitz condition; it does not establish stability, global convergence, or the PDE order of higher-order compositions.Source: §3.3.1 · p. 22

3.3.2. A self-consistent numerical flow for the Vlasov–Poisson system

  • The numerical flow reconstructs fields through velocity quadrature, a discrete Poisson solve, and interpolation, then numerically integrates the frozen characteristics. For an outer method of design order p, choosing characteristic integrator order p_in ≥ p targets an O(τ^(p+1)) local characteristic error under required uniform bounds; overall order also requires stable, consistent field reconstruction and controlled discretization errors.Source: §3.3.2 · pp. 23–24
  • The one-step estimate separates field discrepancy from characteristic integration error, but does not establish fully discrete convergence of SC-NuF.Field discrepancy includes incoming-distribution effects, velocity truncation and quadrature, the Poisson solve, and field interpolation; higher-order compositions also require control of intermediate stage errors.Source: §3.3.2 · p. 25

3.4. Diffeomorphism and volume preservation

  • Under the stated regularity assumptions, exact frozen-field characteristic flows are Cq-diffeomorphisms and preserve phase-space volume. The proof uses the frozen exponential-pullback identity together with integral invariance of the transport exponential.Source: §3.4 · pp. 26–27
  • When accepted and stage fields belong to Cq, the stage, final, and history maps are volume-preserving Cq-diffeomorphisms.These properties persist because the maps are finite compositions of volume-preserving exact frozen-field flows.Source: §3.4 · pp. 28–30
  • The numerical history map preserves nonnegativity whenever defined if initial data are evaluated without a reconstruction that introduces negative values. This positivity statement requires neither volume preservation nor invertibility.Source: §3.4 · p. 30
  • A general explicit Runge–Kutta approximation of the exact frozen-field flow need not preserve volume.Source: §3.4 · p. 30
