TL;DR

Repeated pointwise queries through heterogeneous media are costly because fine-scale transport must otherwise be traversed again. Walk on Multiscale Media compiles that transport into reusable prefabs for edits and composition. In a hybrid solver, these prefabs lower online costs while maintaining comparable solution accuracy to direct Walk on Spheres.

Abstract

from arXiv · show

Monte Carlo PDE solvers enable mesh-free pointwise queries, but repeatedly traversing heterogeneous media is costly, particularly in scenes with reusable or dynamically changing materials. We introduce Walk on Multiscale Media (WoMM), which compiles fine-scale transport into reusable, editable and composable transport prefabs. A probabilistic interpretation of multiscale finite-element bases and condensed operators yields coarse transitions retaining fine-scale material effects. Each prefab combines port-level operators, entrance-dependent exit distributions, and Poisson-marked trajectory records, enabling incremental updates for overlapping absorption fields, gradient-field steering through path reweighting and transient diffusion. Integrated with conventional Walk-on-Spheres in a hybrid continuous--discrete solver, these prefabs accelerate repeated pointwise PDE queries and support interactive material edits without repeatedly solving the fine-scale problem.

1 Introduction

Repeated pointwise queries in heterogeneous media remain costly because fine-scale structure affects macroscopic transport. Walk on Multiscale Media compiles that transport into reusable prefabs supporting edits, composition, and adaptive evaluation.

1 Introduction

  • Fine-scale structure can strongly influence macroscopic transport, making direct simulation expensive when only a coarse response is needed. This is especially relevant when material instances are repeatedly queried, composed, or modified in interactive scenes.Source: §1 · p. 1
  • Monte Carlo PDE solvers enable mesh-free pointwise evaluation, but repeated stochastic transport remains costly, while multiscale operators are generally designed for coarse discretized systems.Combining heterogeneous transport with arbitrary entrance queries, incremental edits, and spatial composition remains challenging.Source: §1 · p. 1
  • Walk on Multiscale Media compiles fine-scale heterogeneous transport into reusable prefabs with port-level responses, entrance-dependent exits, and stochastic path caches.Cached events support incremental material updates through reweighting; prefabs can be composed and integrated with continuous Monte Carlo solvers using adaptive resolution.Source: §1 · pp. 1–2
  • The contributions comprise reusable multiscale transport prefabs, cached-event reweighting for edits and steering, and adaptive continuous–discrete simulation with query-centric resolution selection. The edit framework also supports overlapping absorption fields and temporal transport edits.Source: §1 · p. 2

3 Preliminaries

The preliminaries connect coarse multiscale operators to fine-scale elliptic transport and its random-walk interpretation. This connection yields port transitions and exit probabilities that retain effects of the eliminated interior.

3.1 Multiscale Discretization of Elliptic PDEs

  • MsFEM constructs local elliptic basis functions from fine-scale heterogeneity, whose nonnegative graph conductances support a random-walk interpretation. The local energy minimizer gives the screened harmonic extension under prescribed port values.Source: §3.1 · p. 2
  • Eliminating interior degrees of freedom yields a Schur complement that acts as a discrete Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator and retains fine-scale response in the coarse system. Its interior contribution captures transport through the eliminated region.Source: §3.1 · pp. 2–3

3.2 Random-Walk Interpretation of Multiscale Operators

  • Screened first-exit probabilities equal the MsFEM basis values, while the condensed operator induces coarse port transitions and requires a fine-boundary exit kernel to retain exit location. The first-exit kernel aggregates boundary probabilities by port, and the Schur complement defines the coarse transitions.Source: §3.2 · p. 3
  • Conditioning a walk on a prescribed boundary event gives a Doob h-transform whose jump rates reweight conductances by the harmonic function. For a general positive h, the scalar transform changes the generator through conductance reweighting; harmonic steering leaves only endpoint weights in the stated path representation.Source: §3.2 · p. 3

4 Editable and Composable Multiscale Transport Prefabs

Walk on Multiscale Media compiles heterogeneous transport into reusable prefabs whose cached records and coarse operators can be updated and composed. The section describes their stochastic construction, incremental edits, steering, hybrid coupling, and query-adaptive resolution.

4 Editable and Composable Multiscale Transport Prefabs

  • Compiled prefabs combine coarse transport operators, compact Poisson-marked event records, and reconstructed exit kernels for reuse across transport queries.Reweighting the same event bank updates the condensed operator and provides macro-transitions for hybrid Monte Carlo simulation.Source: §4 · p. 3

4.1 Stochastic Prefab Precomputation

  • Sparse interior anchors provide interpolated, entrance-dependent fine-boundary exits, replacing interior walks while accounting for absorption.Port-guided sampling under strong screening yielded limited improvement and adds preprocessing overhead.Source: §4.1 · pp. 3–4

4.2 Incremental Composition via Marked Paths

  • Reweighting existing records estimates edit-induced operator changes without new spatial walks; the edit-local estimator is unbiased under its independence and screening-rate assumptions. The theorem bounds variance by 1/N; physically superposed nonnegative screening fields add in their overlap.Source: §4.2 · p. 4

4.3 Low-Dimensional Steering and Temporal Edits

  • Port-weight steering supports endpoint reweighting for harmonic fields, while non-harmonic steering adds weight variance; transient capacity edits require richer space–time records and clock updates.Transient screening edits can be handled by reweighting, but exact replay for heterogeneous capacity or screening also needs within-step occupation information or sufficiently localized steps.Source: §4.3 · p. 5

4.4 Hybrid Continuous–Discrete Monte Carlo Walks

  • The hybrid walk maps continuous positions to coarse-cell ports, traverses the internal skeleton, then restores a fine-resolution prefab-boundary exit before resuming exterior WoS.The inner trigger and outer exit are separated to avoid repeated switching at artificial interfaces.Source: §4.4 · pp. 5–6

4.5 Adaptive Multiscale Transport

  • Each query uses fine resolution for prefabs within refinement radius r and coarse resolution farther away, with the assignment fixed across that query’s walks. Both resolutions share the same prefab interface, so switching does not require modifying the global solver.Source: §4.5 · p. 6

5 Experiments

The experiments test compiled transport accuracy, editing, steering, temporal reuse, and query-centric resolution. Across the complete solver benchmark, the Hybrid lowers online costs while maintaining comparable solution accuracy to variable-coefficient WoS.

5.1 Stochastic Compilation and Multiscale Accuracy

  • Aggregated coarse-transfer error stabilizes sooner than individual stochastic basis values, while more ports and denser entrance anchors improve solution accuracy in their respective roles.Increasing compilation budget reduces both basis and transfer errors; event-bank size produces only moderate, non-monotonic solution-error changes at a fixed online budget.Source: §5.1 · p. 6

5.3 Incremental Editing Accuracy

  • Edit-local increments have sub-percent average relative error for ordinary supports, but smaller supports raise relative error; more cached paths reduce pose-level error. In the complete Hybrid, strong screening edits track overall changes, while localized edits have weaker signals that are harder to distinguish from sampling noise; more online draws improve errors.Source: §5.3 · pp. 7–8

5.2 End-to-End Solver Performance

  • The complete Hybrid is approximately 22–28× faster online than archived official WoS measurements and has lower RMSE in three of four configurations.Direct WoS performs slightly better in the unedited smooth case; Table 2 compares the solvers at matched online sample counts.Source: §5.2 · p. 7, Table 2 · p. 8

5.4 Edit-Local Schur Updates

  • Edit-local Schur updates are 25.9–42.9× faster below 5% edited nodes and retain a 1.8× advantage when the entire interior is edited. The advantage decreases with edit support; increasing cached records from 64 to 256 generally lowers coarse-response error while retaining lower work than full refactorization.Source: §5.4 · p. 9

5.5 Transport Steering and Temporal Responses

  • Harmonic endpoint reweighting steers exits without new spatial trajectories, with discrepancy growing as steering strengthens; Laplace-domain capacity edits remain close to discrete references across the tested range.Direct-time heat-ball estimates follow expected decay across tested capacities, and cached spatial histories reproduce responses under varying capacity fields, including delayed propagation from increased local storage.Source: §5.5 · pp. 9–10

5.6 Spatial Reuse and Query-Centric Resolution

  • As refinement radius increases, adaptive responses approach the all-fine response while online CPU time generally rises, showing a controllable cost–fidelity trade-off.The paired discrepancy measures resolution-selection effects under matched sampling, not absolute error against the continuum PDE solution.Source: §5.6 · p. 10

6 Conclusion

The framework compiles fine-scale heterogeneous transport into reusable stochastic prefabs for efficient multiscale simulation and interactive material editing. It is most beneficial for repeatedly queried or edited scenes, but assumes fixed underlying diffusivity up to scaling and requires upfront preprocessing.
